The firewall can be regarded as a modern adaptation of that old medieval security solutions: digging a ditch around your castle defense. This project force anyone who wanted to enter or leave the castle to go over one bridge, where they could be inspected by police input / output.
Computer networks can do the same trick: a company can have several local networks (LANs) connected in arbitrary ways, but all traffic to or from a company is forced through a drawbridge electronic firewall.
Protected computer networks are located behind a firewall and is protected by its policies. Unprotected networks such as Internet, facing a firewall and are not protected by its policies.
What is NOT a firewall?

What is NOT a firewall?
