Google is expanding its mobile search capabilities
The handwriting recognition function is more an addition to the onscreen keyboard, and not a substitute for it. The function can be turned on or off from the "Settings" menu, located at the bottom of the homepage.
Searching with handwriting seems to work better on the mobile browsers Safari and Chrome. The new feature works only on the mobile version of Google.com, and on the phones which are running at least Android 2, Android 4.0 tablets, and Apple IOS 5 devices.
Google says that handwriting is especially effective when "you are standing on a street corner, in a taxi on a bumpy road, or while chatting with a friend, or when you are sitting on the couch".
