Widespread geographic networks (WAN - Wide Area Networks) covers a very wide geographical area - a country or continent.
WAN network engages a number of machines used to run user programs.
These machines are called, usually, the host machine or final systems.
Host machines are connected by a communication subnet which is responsible for transporting messages from host to host. Subnet consists of two distinct components: transmission lines and switching elements. Switching elements are specialized computers used to connect two or more transmission lines. When data arrives over a transmission line, switching element must choose a new line to relay data on. They also occur as packet switching nodes, intermediate systems, data switches and routers. WAN networks connecting multiple LANs and the Internet connects multiple WANs.
